During the Middle Ages, legends circulated throughout Europe about a peculiar hybrid creature from distant Central Asia, half-animal, half-plant, known as the "Vegetable Lamb of Tartary" This was a mysterious plant-like animal called "Barometz" (meaning "lamb" in Tartary). In legend, it was both a plant and a living being. In the vast wilderness, the stem of this plant did not bear flowers or fruit, but was connected to a woolly, living lamb through a flexible rootstock like an umbilical cord. The lamb, with bones, flesh, and warm blood, grazed on the grass within a radius around the main stem, guided by the movement of this plant umbilical cord. However, Unable to leave its place, once the lamb had devoured all the available grass, the nutrient-deprived rootstock would wither, and the lamb would die.
